Maryland volleyball libero Kelsey Wicinski announced via Instagram she would transfer to Florida State.
Wicinski has one year of eligibility remaining after being a key member of coach Steve Aird’s squad over the past three seasons.
During a junior year shortened due to what Aird deemed an “upper-body injury,” Wicinski led the Terps with 301 digs. Before she was sidelined for an Oct. 13 match against Northwestern, she led the Big Ten with 4.78 digs per set.
“I am so excited to announce that I will be finishing my academic and volleyball career at Florida State University!!!” Wicinski wrote on Instagram. “I am so thankful for this amazing opportunity and I’m looking forward to this next chapter in my life! #GoNoles.”
In Wicinski’s stead, freshman Sam Burgio filled in for libero duties to end the campaign. Burgio didn’t deliver the same production as Wicinski in her rookie year, though, averaging 1.93 digs per set while committing 28 receiving errors.
Wicinski’s announcement means Maryland will lose three players next year following the graduations of middle blocker Hailey Murray and defensive specialist Samantha Higginbothem.
Burgio and defensive specialist Nell Drummey will be the only defensive-minded players on Aird’s roster, barring a transfer. Aird announced just one player — middle blocker Rainelle Jones — as part of his 2018 recruiting class.
