What to watch for the Terps: Slaying the giants
Maryland has already played one top-5 team this season — the team suffered a 92-84 defeat at the hands of No. 4 South Carolina, the reigning national champion, on Monday. The Terps made a furious comeback in that game but came up short, which was also the case in Maryland’s loss to this UConn team last season.
Brenda Frese’s team is 0-6 all-time against UConn, but the Terps get another chance to take down women’s college basketball’s dynasty on Sunday, and it would be an incredible win for the program.
What to watch for the Huskies: Not the defending champs
For the first time since the 2012-13 season, the UConn Huskies are not heading into the season as the reigning national champions. The reason? A stunning overtime loss to Mississippi State in last season’s Final Four.
Now, this Huskies team that returns most of its roster from last season is hungry to be back on top, which showed in its two blowouts wins over top-25 teams (Stanford and Cal) to start the season. If the Terps aren’t playing their best basketball, they may become Geno Auriemma’s next victim.
