Maryland men’s lacrosse will defend its first national championship in 42 years with a daunting nonconference schedule, the program announced Thursday.

The Terps, who won the 2017 NCAA title, will face three teams that reached last year’s tournament, including Albany, which they defeated in the second round of the postseason.

“We are thrilled to unveil another challenging and exciting schedule for the 2018 season,” coach John Tillman said. “We take immense pride in seeking the best possible competition for both our incredible fans and our student-athletes, and we look forward to testing ourselves against the nation’s best.”

The Terps’ matchup with North Carolina, which beat them in the 2016 national championship game, will take place in Costa Mesa, California. They’ll also take on Notre Dame in College Park. The Fighting Irish beat Maryland 5-4 last season.

Maryland will play Villanova in Philadelphia on March 17. The Wildcats upset the Terps at Maryland Stadium as an unranked team last year, which the players said inspired them to go on a run of 12 wins in their final 13 games.

The Terps will begin their season Feb. 10 against Navy.
