The University of Maryland is equipped with some of the most top-notch tools and resources for higher learning. There are eight libraries to choose from, along with an extensive online research database at our fingertips. Don’t forget the excellent academic facilities filled with state-of-the-art technology.

But there is one thing this university has been lacking — until now.

A Dunkin’ Donuts within walking distance from the campus.

On Nov. 10, the city of College Park announced six new food options will be coming to Terrapin Row. They include Wings Over, Cheers Cut, Poki District, Gong Cha, Seoul Spice and, most importantly, Dunkin’ Donuts.

It is nearly impossible for students who live on or near campus to reach a Dunkin’ unless you want to take a car or bus — the closest location is all the way on the far end of Route 1.

With the addition of Bagels ‘n Grinds at The Hotel earlier this year, College Park received a much-needed new breakfast spot, but the void in our hearts still wasn’t full. Bagels ‘n Grinds and Bagel Place will serve you a great breakfast sandwich, but not necessarily at lightning-fast speeds. Starbucks will churn out coffee, but its food options remain severely lacking. You can buy a serviceable bagel (your options are almost exclusively either blueberry or plain) in many different campus café locations, including Footnotes, but it will be dependably filling and underwhelming.

But where can you walk to get a dozen donuts? Where can you buy iced coffee that is not only delicious, but also dirt-cheap? Where on campus can you get a cardboard box filled to the brim with donut holes? Where can you buy a frozen drink that contains more sugar than ever thought possible? Where is that comforting orange and pink sign?

Dunkin’ Donuts is the fast, cheap, dependable chain we need to survive those early mornings in class and those cold and tiring walks across campus. It’s the link we’ve been missing all along. It could boost student happiness, class attendance and productivity. I’m pretty sure it’s the only thing stopping us from becoming an Ivy League school.

Sure, in a perfect world, this university would be welcoming a family-run breakfast joint. It would be a one-of-a-kind place, a taste you could only find here, a campus establishment loved by students because of its unique and homey quality.

Assuming that’s not an option, a Dunkin’ Donuts will do just fine.

America runs on Dunkin’. For too long, the University of Maryland has been walking.
