The Maryland women’s lacrosse team was awarded the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA tournament on Sunday night after it completed an unbeaten regular season and won the Big Ten tournament title with victories over Johns Hopkins and Northwestern.
The Terps (19-0) beat the Wildcats to claim the conference championship Sunday afternoon, and found out they earned home field advantage through the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament when the selection committee announced it that evening.
After a first-round bye, the Terps will face the winner of Towson (12-6) vs. High Point (15-3) at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex on May 14. They hold home field advantage until the final four at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
The Wildcats, who the Terps defeated twice in the past 10 days, were among the other teams added to Maryland’s region of the bracket. Penn State, another Big Ten foe, was awarded the No. 4 seed.
Albany, Bryant and Stony Brook round out Maryland’s section of the bracket. It’s the fifth consecutive year the Terps received the top seed in the tournament.
