The Maryland men’s lacrosse team’s 12-5 victory over then-No. 8 Johns Hopkins on Saturday propelled it to the No. 1 national ranking.
While the Terps (10-3, 4-1 Big Ten) entered the contest No. 5, their dominance over the Blue Jays helped them attain the top position for the first time since March 6, two days after falling at Notre Dame. Since that defeat, the squad dropped as low as No. 10 before winning six of its past seven matchups.
Maryland’s performance against Johns Hopkins (8-5, 3-2) marked its 12th double-digit scoring output of the season. Meanwhile, the Terps equaled their best defensive showing by allowing just five scores.
Attackman Matt Rambo broke the program’s points record with a second-quarter finish, passing Bob Boneillo’s previous mark of 231. He also tied a career-high seven points on three goals and four assists.
Rambo needs eight more goals to shatter Maryland’s goal scoring record. The senior can add to his tally in the first round of the Big Ten tournament on Thursday against Penn State, a team he recorded four goals against in a win April 8. If the Terps win , they’ll play again Saturday night in the conference tournament final.
