After defeating top-ranked North Carolina on Saturday, the Maryland women’s lacrosse team took over the No. 1 spot in the poll Inside Lacrosse released on Monday.
The Terps (3-0) began the season at No. 2 behind North Carolina after falling to the Tar Heels in the national championship last May.
They held the second spot for two weeks after victories over William & Mary on Feb. 11 and Georgetown on Feb. 18.
Maryland is averaging more than 14 goals per game and allowing less than nine through three games. Ten Terps have found the net so far.
Attackers Megan Whittle and Caroline Wannen lead the team with eight goals each, while midfielder Jen Giles paces with four assists. Goalkeeper Megan Taylor has 27 stops for a .562 save percentage.
The Tar Heels began the season 3-0 before falling to the Terps, and they dropped to No. 2 this week.
The Terps will look to affirm their top ranking Saturday when they travel to Hofstra.
