Maryland football’s 2017 recruiting class took a hit when its cornerstone commit, five-star defensive end Josh Kaindoh, revoked his commitment and reopened his recruitment.
This was a sizable letdown for Maryland fans, who had to watch the team get spanked multiple times by Big Ten opponents who were way out of their league. Kaindoh could recommit later on, but the potential loss is significant.
According to an Inside Maryland Sports report, Kaindoh’s mother was equally devastated, telling the site she’s “heartbroken.”
“I support him because he is my son,” she said. “[But] I’m hoping he will realize that Maryland is the best place for him because it is close to home, you don’t have to sacrifice your education and you’re going to be around your family and friends to support you,” she said. “I’m hoping to God that he will [change his mind].”
“I don’t feel good. I’m sick over the whole deal,” she said. “But I’m just his mother. I can only say so much.”
Kaindoh originally committed to Maryland in April. Recruits often change their minds, but as recently as October, Kaindoh told The Diamondback about how “It’s easy to go to a top dog and just do that,” and that he wants “to help build us up.”
He reopened his recruitment after an official visit to Penn State last weekend, when the Nittany Lions won the Big Ten championship.
Kaindoh is announcing his final decision Jan. 1 at the Under Armour All-America Game.
