After a punt return touchdown Saturday afternoon against Rutgers, Maryland football wide receiver Teldrick Morgan earned the Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week honor, the conference announced Tuesday.

The graduate transfer from New Mexico State fielded a punt midway through the third quarter and shed a point-blank tackle from a Rutgers player. He then scampered 83 yards up the sideline to push the Terps’ lead to 14 points. Maryland went on to defeat the Scarlet Knights, 31-13, for its sixth win of the season.

He didn’t catch a pass on offense, but Morgan finished with 113 yards on three punt returns, a responsibility he’s assumed since cornerback and All-American punt returner Will Likely tore his ACL in mid-October.

The score against the Scarlet Knights was Morgan’s first on special teams, though he’s caught three touchdowns and gained 407 receiving yards on offense this season. He also has a team-high 40 receptions.

Morgan, a Meade High School product who transferred to College Park this summer to play in front of his home crowd, participated in the Senior Day ceremony before the game. His burst helped ensure Maryland clinched bowl eligibility to extend his homecoming season.
