Maryland football linebackers Jermaine Carter Jr. and Shane Cockerille have earned All-Big Ten Honorable Mention, the conference announced Tuesday night. Cornerback Will Likely, who suffered a torn ACL in mid-October, is the team’s sportsmanship award winner.
Cockerille, who switched to linebacker in the offseason after stints at quarterback and fullback in his first three seasons, led the Terps with 108 tackles, which ranks third in the Big Ten.
Carter, meanwhile, finished the regular season with 103 tackles to earn the distinction for a second consecutive year. Perhaps his best performance came Saturday afternoon when the Terps beat Rutgers to clinch a postseason berth in coach DJ Durkin’s first season.
The redshirt junior made a career-high 15 tackles, including two sacks, and stripped a Scarlet Knights receiver of a catch deep in coverage.
The duo will look to lead Maryland’s defense in its bowl game, which will be finalized after next weekend’s conference championships.
