In recent history, Prince George’s County has voted for and contributed heavily to the Democratic Party during election season.
The county, which has a total of 571,296 registered active voters, had 450,755 registered active Democratic voters as of September 2016, according to Maryland Board of Elections voter data. In comparison, there were 42,915 active Republican voters reported at that time.
The number of registered voters for this election comes in close proximity to the 2012 presidential election, where there was a total of 568,591 total registered voters in this county, according to state board of elections data. Of that number, 27,106 were registered Democratic voters aged 18 to 24, and 1,919 were registered Republican voters aged 18 to 24.
While the city of College Park does not provide voter breakdown for major elections, there were 17,188 people registered to vote in 2015, according to city statistics.
In addition to having more Democratic voters, the county also has more donors giving money to Democratic campaigns. During the 2016 election cycle, county residents contributed nearly $3.9 million toward federal candidates, parties, PACs and outside spending organizations, with $2.6 million going to Democratic campaigns and $360,726 going to Republican campaigns, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.
The Washington Metro Area contributed about $58 million in total to federal campaigns for this election, according to the center.
