The Maryland women’s basketball team’s opening exhibition drew national headlines, as the fifth-ranked Terps defeated Bluefield State, 146-17, Wednesday night. Bluefield State, a Division II program that finished 2-24 last season, did not score in the second half. The Terps ended the game on a 78-0 run.
Sunday afternoon, a school that hasn’t won a game since 2012 came to Xfinity Center. The Terps didn’t win by 129 points, but that number was within reach.
Here are 10 statistics from Maryland’s 153-27 win over Mary Baldwin:
1. Center Jenna Staiti, the Terps leading scorer, converted two more field goals and had two less points than Mary Baldwin’s entire team.
2. Guard Kaila Charles’s jumper at the 6:42 mark of the first quarter marked the Terps’ 10th field goal. Mary Baldwin finished the game with 10 field goals.
3. Maryland outscored Mary Baldwin, 48-2, in the opening period.
4. Mary Baldwin had 44 turnovers and 27 points.
5. Maryland held a 70-point advantage at the half, despite shooting just 2 of 8 from three-point range.
6. Halfway through the third quarter, Mary Baldwin had 22 shot attempts. The Terps had 22 offensive rebounds at that same mark.
7. All but three of Maryland’s players are at least 6 feet. Mary Baldwin’s tallest players are 5-foot-10.
8. Maryland had 35 steals.
9. Mary Baldwin forced one steal. All 11 Terps players that saw the court had at least one steal.
10. Nine Terps players finished in double figures. Guard Aayana Nedd, Mary Baldwin’s leading scorer, finished with six points.
If this were a regular season game, this result would mark the Fighting Squirrels’ 104th consecutive loss.
