With his 204 yards and two touchdowns on seven rushes, Maryland football running back Ty Johnson helped his team clinch a 50-7 homecoming victory against Purdue on Saturday.
The performance also garnered him an individual accolade Monday, when the conference announced Johnson as the Big Ten Player of the Week.
The sophomore’s burst against the Boilermakers came on a day the Terps totaled 400 yards on the ground. Ten players recorded at least one carry en route to a 4-0 start to the 2016-2017 season under first-year coach DJ Durkin.
“That’s probably Ty’s No. 1 ability — he’s got some really good speed, and he can take it the distance,” Durkin said on a conference call Monday morning. “Obviously, that showed.”
This weekend, Johnson will look to again power the backfield when the Terps travel to face Penn State and the Nittany Lions’ defense that allows opponents to average 216.6 rushing yards a game.
