The SGA appointed 23 new members and passed bills in support of the annual On- and Off-Campus Safety Walk and renting space in the Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center at its weekly meeting Wednesday night.

The new appointees filled 22 vacant legislature positions and one executive position. Sophomore economics major Michael Trim will serve on the executive board as student groups defender.

Both votes were unanimous.

The safety walk, in which Student Government Association members assess the campus and the surrounding area to find places that could potentially be safer, is set to take place on Oct. 7.

The second bill proposed using SGA funds to reserve space in the Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center for four general body meetings throughout the semester, which will take place on Sept. 28, Oct. 26, Nov. 30 and Dec. 7 . The cost would be $200 per evening.

“The normal amount that we spend on [Stamp Student Union] rooms is significantly cheaper,” said Perry Bloch, the SGA financial affairs vice president and a senior computer science and economics major. Rooms in Stamp Student Union cost between $8 and $21 per hour.

No rooms in Stamp, where the SGA usually holds its general body meetings, were available for the proposed dates.

The 23 newly appointed members could not vote on the bill concerning rental space because they had not yet been trained financially, but Chris Ricigliano, the speaker of the legislature, encouraged them to ask questions and participate in the discussion.

“It’s important for you guys to know how we’re spending this money [and] why we’re spending this money,” said Ricigliano, a junior government and politics and history major.

The SGA plans to vote on three bills next week: resolutions endorsing the proposed student fee supporting the Office of Civil Rights and Sexual Misconduct, funding the annual SGA crab feast and supporting a letter to university administration regarding its strategic plan, according to the agenda.
