The College Park City Council voted Tuesday to partner with the University of Maryland to develop a proposed day care center at a former school on Calvert Road.
The city and the university will now enter negotiations regarding the funding and details of the project. The vote was 8-1.
The facility would have 120 seats for children younger than 5 whose parents are College Park residents or university employees, according to a Diamondback article published Sept. 15.
The renovation of the site will cost $6 million, according to a presentation from Carlo Colella, the university’s vice president for administration and finance.
More than a dozen College Park residents attended Tuesday’s work session to voice their support.
The council was also scheduled to meet with university officials to discuss the future of city parking but postponed the dialogue because of time concerns. A council member also expressed concerns that David Allen, director of the university’s Department of Transportation Services, was not present at the meeting.
