Maryland men’s soccer forward Gordon Wild was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week on Tuesday. Wild scored three goals this week, including the game-winning goal with 45 seconds remaining in the No. 5 Terps’ 2-1 victory over Georgetown on Friday.
After transferring from South Carolina Upstate this past offseason, Wild has fit nicely into coach Sasho Cirovski’s up-tempo offense. The nation’s co-leader in goals last season (16) leads the Big Ten with five goals and 11 points.
Wild’s goal Friday came off a penalty kick after he fouled in the box. His initial shot was blocked, but he followed it up to score. The Crew erupted and Wild dove to the corner post in celebration.
In Maryland’s 4-1 victory over South Florida on Monday, Wild scored twice. With his back heel, he one-touched defender Chris Odoi-Atsem’s pass into the goal in the 17th minute. Then in the 65th minute, midfielder Amar Sejdic passed to Wild from midfield. The German struck the ball into the bottom right corner of the net.
