Of Montreal will perform at Washington D.C.’s 9:30 Club on Sep. 7.
The group’s tour, a full loop around the United States, will showcase its 14th studio album Innocence Reaches with a new sound that promises to set a different tone for its performance of an electronic rave.
The progressive rock group from Georgia has been putting out music since 1997, and has had a fluid core of members, centered around frontman Kevin Barnes. Their sound has also evolved significantly over their nearly two decades of music making.
The album’s musical themes of glam rock and psychedelic pop are nothing new to Of Montreal, yet this independent group is showcasing a sound with heavier influences from electronic music and EDM.
Of Montreal has spent its career slighting popular musical trends with its unique sound. But the group seems to hone into pop culture’s musical taste with an electronic sound and bouncy, upbeat rhythms.
Known for their extravagant outfits and wardrobe changes on stage as well as their high-energy engagement with the crowd, Of Montreal will likely continue these themes based on their zany music video for “it’s different for girls,” the first single off their album released this August.
D.C.’s 9:30 club is the sixth stop on their country-wide tour, which has them preforming in a different venue every night from Sep. 2 to 24, a true exercise in endurance.
Tickets for the Wednesday night show are $25. The doors open at 7.
