Midfielder Kate Waters didn’t think the Maryland women’s soccer team’s offense would be built around one player entering this season.

Despite losing forward Alex Anthony, who transferred to USC after leading the Terps in goals last season, Waters expected Maryland to boast a balanced attack.

“I don’t think it will be centrally focused,” Waters said entering Maryland’s matchup with TCU on Friday night. “I think that everyone will get their chance and everyone will have their chance to be the goal scorer or threat.”

But two games into the 2016 season, forward Chelsea Jackson has carried Maryland’s offense. For the second time in as many games, Jackson provided the Terps with their lone goal in a 1-1 draw with Gardner-Webb on Sunday at Ludwig Field.

“We have a lot of threats up top,” forward Lisa Bianchini said. “Everything’s not just so direct.”

Just more than 39 minutes into the game, forward Kady Badham fed Jackson the ball in front of the goal to give Maryland its first advantage of the season. The Terps backline allowed the Bulldogs only four shot opportunities in the first half and entered the intermission with the lead.

“Chelsea is unbelieveable, and I think today she brought her play to another level,” Bianchini said. “I think that was contagious in helping everyone else tap into that extra double [overtime] too.”

Maryland’s backline protected the lead for nearly 33 minutes. But in the second half, which started late as a result of a lightning delay, Gardner-Webb tied the game.

After defender Eline Glamsland’s initial shot was blocked, Jessica Ferguson followed with a shot of her own. The ball got past goalkeeper Rachel Egyed to tie the game in the 72nd minute.

“We’re giving the other teams the ball in bad situations,” coach Ray Leone said. “We’re in a good position for our own attack.”

The Terps took two of three shots in the initial overtime period but were unable to take advantage. Midfielder Madison Turner’s shot with about two minutes remaining in the final overtime period sailed wide to end the Terps’ chance at their first win of the season.

Ahead of Thursday’s match against William & Mary, Leone said the Terps will watch video of their games for the first time this season. They’ll look to make some adjustments in hope of getting into the win column shortly.

“We’re definitely getting better,” midfielder Natasha Ntone-Kouo said. “We’re learning how to manage overtime. We’ll soon be where we want to be.”
