After 61 years, this university is leaving the ACC for the Big Ten Conference. It’s a change, and there’s nothing anyone can do about it. But with Terrapins fall sports starting up, The Diamondback decided to take a look at how teams have fared against conference foes. Staff writers for men’s soccer, field hockey, women’s soccer and volleyball also took a closer look at something that sets their team apart among the others in the conference.

To the left is a map indicating 11 Terps’ ACC opponents (Syracuse, Pittsburgh and Notre Dame, which were added to the league this year, are not included). Click on the icons to see the Terps’ record against their league opponents.

VOLLEYBALL

Staff writer Joshua Needelman caught up with Janice Kruger, who led the Terps volleyball program for 20 years and led the team to its last NCAA tournament appearance in 2005. Kruger is away from coaching now, but she found a new calling that keeps her close to the game.

MEN’S SOCCER

The Terps men’s soccer team is the defending ACC champion and has been one of the top teams in the nation under coach Sasho Cirovski. Tonight, the Terps host rival Duke at Ludwig Field, and a raucous crowd is expected for a classic ACC battle. Staff writer Daniel Popper examines what the loss of the rivalries with Duke and North Carolina means for the program moving forward.

FIELD HOCKEY

North Carolina has long been the main rival for the Terps field hockey team. The two teams have battled back and forth countless times on the national stage. Staff writer Paul Pierre-Louis looks at what an ACC championship means, the rivalry with the Tar Heels and the challenges facing the program as it moves forward into the Big Ten.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

The Terps women’s soccer team found out about the move to the Big Ten just hours after a crushing loss in the NCAA tournament. The defeat and the news combined to challenge the team’s confidence. But as staff writer Nick Munson writes, coach Jonathan Morgan seems to have found stability with his recruiting and with the program’s future.
