On Monday night, the athletic department sent out an email advertising the Terrapins men’s basketball team’s Wednesday matchup against Notre Dame as a “whiteout.” The email also featured guard Nick Faust donning a white uniform with a question mark emblazoned on the front, hinting at the unveil of a new uniform.
A few theories circulated on Twitter as to what the new uniforms could be, and Testudo Times even compiled a list with some of its favorite candidates.
Tuesday afternoon, the questions were answered. The Terps will wear a new “Heritage Uniform” against the Fighting Irish on Wednesday night. It’s the Terps’ standard template, but it features notable words, years and numbers from the program’s history in the detailing. It’s similar to the “Lone Survivor” uniforms Under Armour designed for Texas Tech football and the “player designed” basketball uniforms Northwestern will sport.
The things highlighted in the design, which is in the numbers and on the shorts: 3 (Juan Dixon), 32 (Joe Smith), 34 (Len Bias), 1931-1932 (Terps’ first first-place finish in conference play), 1958 (first NCAA tournament appearance and Elite Eight appearance) 1975, 1980, 1995 (first-place ACC finishes), 2002 (national champions), College Park, Maryland and Cole Field House. All of those have to do with the history of Terps men’s basketball in one way or another.
No matter how you feel about it, it’s a new look that appears to be relatively understated.
