The Terrapins football team’s offense has struggled throughout the season. What it’s accomplished today, though, is a new low.

The Terps have run 23 plays and gained just 60 yards. Linebacker-turned-quarterback Shawn Petty has attempted six passes and completed just one — a one yard gain for Stefon Diggs. And they only have four first downs on the afternoon, the first of which didn’t come until a running into the kicker penalty midway through the second quarter.

With the lackluster offensive effort, the Terps trail Georgia Tech, 20-0, at halftime. And it doesn’t figure to get much better in the second half.

Petty, making his first career start at quarterback, is 1-of-6 passing for one yard and has 11 rush yards on eight carries. The Terps’ best quarterback has been running back Wes Brown, who has 38 yards on nine carries, some of which have come out of the team’s “Wild Crab” formation.

On the other side of the ball, the Yellow Jackets have taken advantage of what looks like a tired Terps’ defense. Their vaunted triple-option attack has totaled 174 rushing yards and three touchdowns.

There’s still a half left to play at Byrd Stadium. But so far, the Shawn Petty era has gotten off to a rocky start.
