GREENBELT — Firefighters and police responded to a crash in Greenbelt Sunday night that involved a carjacked ambulance, leaving one dead, officials said.
Before the collision around 5:45 p.m., two Branchville Volunteer Fire Company and Rescue Squad volunteers were allegedly assaulted by an unidentified male suspect. He took off in the ambulance on the Beltway, said Prince George’s Police Department Cpl. Nicole Hubbard.
The ambulance collided with one vehicle, hit several other parked vehicles and overturned at the intersection of Greenbelt Road and 62nd Avenue, she said.
The adult male driver and the adult female passenger of one vehicle involved in the collision were both transported to a hospital following the crash. The male driver was later pronounced dead from his injuries, and the female passenger is listed in stable condition after sustaining non-life-threatening injuries, Hubbard said.
The suspect is currently in critical condition, and no one involved in the incident has been identified, she said.
Officials said the investigation for the carjacking and crash is ongoing.
