Chris Brown has had a rough couple of years.
After Brown’s infamous domestic violence incident with Rihanna, his career has been on a downward trend. Some of his singles received major radio airplay, but his album sales overall aren’t the best, and his conduct away from the recording studio has been anything but exemplary.
He’s allegedly engaged in fights with Frank Ocean’s and Drake’s entourages, trashed Good Morning America’s studios after an interview, was arrested for a felony assault in Washington, allegedly was involved in an hit-and-run and has been in and out of rehab.
There were no signs of these types of behavior before attacking Rihanna, so why is he acting so erratically now? In my opinion, it’s because of the press that constantly surrounds him, as it did this week.
TMZ reported Sept. 29 that Brown’s girlfriend and mother are worried about his alleged gang activity and fear for his life. TMZ didn’t say the source of the information or publish any quotes from members of Brown’s family confirming this report. It seems as though they just went with their gut impulse without realizing the effects a report like this could have.
TMZ also reported a woman tried to kiss Brown as he was walking onstage during a nightclub appearance. As Brown is walking up to the stage, he moves past the woman while security guards push her away from him. Instead of focusing on the woman in this situation, TMZ felt as though this was the perfect opportunity to use the headline “Chris Brown Shoves Woman,” even though Brown wasn’t the aggressor in the situation.
You can’t expect Brown to improve himself as a person if he’s constantly being attacked by society and painted as a villain. By posting sensationalist stories such as this with no backing and no proof, you’re ruining the man’s career, his reputation and his ability to progress.
We live in a country of second chances, but it seems as though no one is willing to give Brown a chance to let go of his past. Posting stories such as this makes Brown vulnerable to attacks from the general public, who are looking for their own 30 seconds of fame by provoking Brown in a certain way.
And to associate Brown with the Bloods is absolutely atrocious. TMZ is literally putting Brown’s life in danger by associating him with gangs that could attempt to assassinate him at any time if they so chose.
It sounds extreme and unlikely … until it actually happens.
It’s unfair and unjust, but I don’t know why I’m expecting fairness and sound journalism from an organization like TMZ, which breaks so many ethical codes and doesn’t seem to have any moral standing.
