University students will have yet another spot to grab their daily caffeine fix when they flood back to the campus with the newly opened Casey’s Coffee.
The independent coffee shop opened early last month under Domain at College Park on Campus Drive, making this shop the business’s fourth location. Casey’s Coffee has other locations in Washington and throughout this state.
The shop was originally supposed to open in College Park last fall, but general contracting issues delayed it, said Christopher Lee, Casey’s Coffee manager.
While Lee said he was hoping to have the shop opened at the start of spring when students were on the campus, he still anticipates success in this location.
“Our wish is that we quickly become part of the College Park community and become a local favorite, especially when the fall semester starts,” Lee said.
Senior business major Alen Kelejan said she could see some students, such as those in the business school, opting to go to Casey’s instead of Starbucks, which is farther away.
“It’s a more convenient distance,” Kelejan said. “People don’t want to walk that much for a cup of coffee.”
While Huma Moinuddin said the shop’s location might be convenient, she said she still plans to go to Starbucks. She still wants to give Casey’s a try, she said.
“Starbucks is already well-known and popular for drinks that only it makes,” the senior psychology major said.
Moinuddin said taste and price are factors influencing where she chooses to buy coffee, too. At Casey’s, prices range from $1.55 for a cup of hot tea to $4.40 for a large frappe. The business does not just serve coffee to customers — it offers breakfast and lunch with options such as waffles, specialty drinks, soups and salads priced between $2.50 and $7.
“I like to make my coffee at home for the most part, but when I do buy coffee, I look for convenience,” Moinuddin said. “So whatever is by the library or wherever I am studying during that time is usually where I buy my coffee.”
District 2 Councilman P.J. Brennan, a university alumnus, said he welcomes the addition of Casey’s Coffee to the city.
“When I attended UMD, commercial food and other retail offerings on the southwest side of campus were nonexistent,” Brennan said. “I’ve noticed their stores popping up all over D.C., and I look forward to giving them a try.”
Casey’s Coffee accompanies Subway, Tutti Frutti and Gateway Newstands on Domain’s ground floor.
