DBK + CONTEXT is The Diamondback’s new blog, where we share news that might not otherwise be found in our regular coverage.
While there’s been construction on the University of Maryland campus year-round, it seems summer is the time to take away some popular eating options from those of us working or staying in College Park.
Starting Friday, the Chick-fil-A in Stamp Student Union’s food court will be closed until mid-August, according to the Stamp website.
Normally at lunchtime, there are 12 options to choose from — not counting The Coffee Bar and The Dairy. However, Adele’s, the Maryland Food Co-op and Subway are out of the way of the main food court.
Without the Chick-fil-A, which tends to get a lot of traffic, that leaves eight food court options for people visiting campus for big events such as this week’s National History Day competition, plus everyday Stamp traffic and freshmen orientation guests.
It also leaves nowhere to get delicious waffle fries or that addicting yellow sauce.
And speaking of addictions, those living off the campus or in Leonardtown will have to find someplace other than Starbucks to feed their caffeine cravings for another week.
A sign on the door and visible construction inside told customers the Seattle-based coffee chain on Route 1 closed on June 7 and will reopen June 22.
The next-closest Starbucks is in the Cherry Hill shopping center, near Shoppers.
But there is hope for those waiting on Chick-fil-A’s reopening — the Target Express under the new Landmark apartments on Route 1 opens July 26. Although it isn’t Chick-fil-A, hopefully it will tide us over until the reopening.
