Midfielder Anna Dessoye whips a shot inside the Wake Forest penalty area during the Terps’ 4-1 victory over Wake Forest on Sept. 20, 2013

Though the scoring opportunities were sparse during the first period, the Terrapins field hockey team eventually found a way through No. 7 Massachusetts in its 4-1 win on Sunday at Richard F. Garber Field in Amherst, Mass.

Midfielder Anna Dessoye scored twice for the Terps, with forward Emma Rissinger and midfielder Hayley Turner also providing goals, to lift the team to its 10th-straight win of the season.

The No. 2 Terps and Minutewomen had only four shots combined in the first half. But Dessoye got the Terps (10-0) on the board first with a goal seconds before the end of the first period. The Minutewomen (7-4) had two penalty corners in the first half, but were able to muster only one shot off the pair of set plays.

Both teams created more opportunities in the second half, with UMass having the 9-5 edge in shots. The Terps, however, were more efficient with their chances, as Rissinger scored in the 45th minute to double the team’s lead. Dessoye got her second goal of the game four minutes later to make it 3-0.

The Minutewomen cut the lead to 3-1 in the 59th minute, as forward Lindsay Bowman scored after controlling a blocked shot off a penalty corner.

The Terps faced a flurry of penalty corners in the final four minutes of the game, but they denied UMass from cutting the deficit any further. Turner scored moments before the end of the game to reestablish the Terps’ three-goal lead.

The team will now look toward its trip to Chapel Hill, N.C., where they will face No. 1 North Carolina on Saturday for its third ACC match up.
