Brenda Frese cuts down the net after Maryland defeated Georgia Tech in the 2012 ACC Championship.

Terrapins women’s basketball coach Brenda Frese signed a multi-year extension to her contract, athletic director Kevin Anderson announced on Friday.

The extension will keep Frese with the Terps until at least June 2021, but the 12th-year coach could potentially earn four additional years to her extension through June 2025.

“Coach Frese has been the driving force in putting Maryland women’s basketball in a position of national prominence during her time here in College Park,” Anderson said in a release. “We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to ensure that her passion and vision will enable us to remain as one of the top programs in the country for many years to come.”

Frese has an overall record of 280-81 with the Terps and has made the NCAA tournament in nine of the past 10 seasons. The team won one national title in 2006 and has reached the Elite Eight four times during that same span. Frese has also coached the Terps to two ACC titles.

“I’m very grateful to be able to represent one of the tops universities in the world and have such longevity,” Frese said in a release. “I’ve been fortunate to have great players, a terrific staff and an incredibly supportive community.”

The announcement comes before the No. 8 Terps face No. 1 Connecticut in a marquee matchup tonight at the Comcast Center. The Huskies beat the Terps twice last year, with the second victory coming in the Sweet 16 to end the Terps season.
