Terrapins baseball right-hander Mike Shawaryn set a school career wins record Friday as the Terps snapped a three-game losing streak with a 12-3 win at Purdue. Coach John Szefc’s team also earned a 7-3 win in the nightcap of the doubleheader.

The Terps will go for the series sweep Sunday at noon.

In Game 1, Shawaryn notched his 10th win of the season and 21st in his career, breaking John Rayne’s record set from 1989-1992. Shawaryn scattered four hits over seven scoreless innings and struck out 10 in the victory. The sophomore hurler has now thrown 20 straight scoreless innings.

The Terps provided Shawaryn with an early lead, scoring three runs in the first three innings. The Terps, who entered the game with two combined runs in the previous three games, scored at least one run in seven innings.

Terps left-hander Robert Galligan made his first start of the season in Game 2. After surrendering two runs in the first inning, Galligan didn’t allow another run over the next six frames and struck out 10.

The Terps broke open a tie game with three runs in the third inning, which gave them a 5-2 lead. Third baseman Jose Cuas hit a two-RBI triple during the three-run rally.

Catcher Kevin Martir led the Terps offense over the two games. He went 6-for-9 with a double and a home run. Freshman Kevin Smith, who was the Terps’ designated hitter on Wednesday, started at shortstop in both games.

After a paltry showing at VCU in the middle of the week, the Terps’ bats came alive on the road and powered the team to two victories.
