There’s nothing sweeter than a homecoming; a crowd can always count on a great show when an artist returns to his or her old stomping grounds for a show. Luckily for Washington, a hometown citizen — Citizen Cope — is making his return to the city’s 9:30 Club this weekend.
Cope’s music is different than most of the pop music genre; his style rings similar to that of Everlast. He plays an impressive acoustic guitar backed by deep, soulful vocals; however, Cope is more of a poet and a storyteller than Everlast. He blends his emotional narratives with different genres of music including hip-hop, rock and go-go, which is only natural with influences such as Sly Stone, Al Green and Willie Nelson.
Cope is touring to promote his latest effort, The Clarence Greenwood Recordings, the follow-up to his self-titled 2002 album. The new disc showcases a more stripped-down side of his music. Greenwood lacks the overproduction of his earlier works and allows his true musical chops to shine through. One of the album’s many highlights is “Son’s Gonna Rise,” featuring guitar legend Carlos Santana. But as he showed with his last release, Cope’s live show is what has won over his growing fan base.
Tickets for Saturday’s 9 p.m. show are $18. You must be 21 or over to get in, so bring your fake ID. For more information, call (202) 393-0930.
