A 20-year-old student told Prince George’s County Police Wednesday that he was robbed at gunpoint Sunday night at the intersection of College and Yale avenues, police said.

The man apparently had an accomplice and fled on foot, said county police spokeswoman Cpl. Diane Richardson. Although the robbery was reported three days after it occurred, it marked the second robbery on Sunday – another student was robbed that night by two men with similar descriptions on Fraternity Row, police said, and investigators are trying to establish whether the two crimes were connected.

Also Wednesday, county police arrested five men with two guns and a knife on Knox Road near Route 1 in a separate incident during a traffic stop. The men were held on gun charges – the third time men had been arrested for carrying guns in College Park. Police plan to continue to step up patrols this weekend, said Maj. Kevin Davis, commander of the police district where College Park is located.

“Five guns in two weeks over there shows the need for our police presence in College Park,” Davis said. “I think the multiple arrests we have made is the first step in the right direction.”

University Police also arrested a man early Thursday morning after a woman flagged down officers and said a man had just threatened her and two men with a knife next to Wawa at 1:45 a.m. on Knox Road, University Police spokeswoman Maj. Cathy Atwell said. The man drew the knife after the two male students confronted him and the group he was with because they were making derogatory comments to the woman, who is not a student.

Members of the Strategic Enforcement Response Team saw a man matching the description standing with a group of men next to 7-Eleven, Atwell said. The officers ordered the man to the ground, searched him and found a knife.

The man gave officers a fake name, but they discovered his real identity after checking at the address he gave, Atwell said.

Bowie resident Arsenio Aljandro Rodriquez, 19, was arrested and charged with first-degree assault, carrying a concealed and deadly weapon and making a false statement to a police officer.

University Police also have an arrest warrant for a man they believe took part in Tuesday night’s robbery, but have not made an arrest as of press time.

“They’re looking, but haven’t been able to find the suspect yet,” Atwell said.

The robbery reported Wednesday is only the latest in a number of gun-related incidents reported to police. The Bank of America located on Route 1 was robbed Tuesday, and gunfire was reported twice in the downtown area over the last two weekends.

The number of recent gun-related incidents compelled both departments to increase their presence in the downtown area. Atwell said the SERT team will be concentrating in the downtown area and the campus that is adjacent to the downtown area, and has changed shifts to be on duty late at night.

“Really, their goal is to protect the campus by working the downtown area and along that corridor of the campus itself,” Atwell said. “Having the officers in the area is what we’re all about.”

Davis assigned his district’s robbery suppression team and special response team to the downtown area and is making sure the community knows about the increased presence, he said.

“I put a sign up saying the county and campus police are in the area,” Davis said. “I want any bad guy to know when they enter College Park that we’re going to be there.”
