A College Park man was arrested Wednesday in connection with an early morning stabbing that took place on Knox Road near South Campus Commons building four Sunday.
Prince George’s County Police said Andrew Schumacher, 18, broke a beer bottle over man’s head during an argument, then used a piece of glass from the bottle to stab the man as he lay on the ground. Schumacher allegedly left the scene after he cut the victim in the upper and lower body, police said.
After the stabbing, the victim made his way down the hill, crossed Route 1 and stopped in front of Cornerstone Grill and Loft, where police found him when they responded to a call. He was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
Schumacher was arrested quickly because the victim, an aquaintance of Schumacher, was able to identify him, police said yesterday. It was unclear whether either Schumacher or the victim were students.
Schumacher was charged with first- and second-degree assault, according to police documents. If convicted, Schumacher could face up to 35 years in prison. He is being held on $100,000 bond.
Monday, District 3 Councilman Eric Olson expressed concern about the incident and said similar attacks used to occur more frequently in downtown College Park when bars were more rough and rowdy than they are now.
“Years ago there were a couple stabbings from the old Terrapin Station, where Lupo’s is now,” Olson said. “In the past, it was a bottle that people were being stabbed with.”
College Park also has a history of knife stabbings, including several fatal incidents.
In 2004, a Washington woman was found dead after being stabbed 56 times by a boyfriend in the College Park Motel, and in 2002, the fatal stabbing of student Brandon Malstrom garnered widespread attention and caused University Police to expand patrols into downtown.
Some city officials said the most recent stabbing was troubling, but downplayed it as an apparent crime of passion between acquaintances that should not cause alarm over safety around downtown bars.
