Every week, staff writer Phillip Suitts will take a look at the careers of a number of former Terrapins athletes embarking on professional careers in a variety of leagues. Every Tuesday, it’s former baseball players.
Brett Cecil, LHP, Toronto Blue Jays
2013 stats: 5-1, 2.82 ERA, 1 save, 44 hits, 70 strikeouts, 23 walks in 60.2 IP
Skinny: Cecil hasn’t thrown more than 10 pitches in six straight appearances, a streak that dates back to Aug. 18. What’s more, in four of those six outings, the Dunkirk native threw six pitches or less. This week, Cecil threw just one pitch, inducing a groundball out from Los Angeles Angels slugger Josh Hamilton to end the seventh inning Thursday in a 4-3 loss.
Justin Maxwell, OF, Kansas City Royals
2013 stats: .255 batting average, .330 on-base percentage, 6 HR, 20 RBI, 32 runs, 6 stolen bases, 68 strikeouts, 20 walks
Skinny: Maxwell’s two-out single in the first inning Wednesday allowed fellow Royals outfielder Lorenzo Cain to drive home the Royals’ third run of the game in the eventual 6-2 victory against the Cleveland Indians. However, Maxwell was pinch hit for in Monday’s contest against the Indians after going 0-for-2 through the first five innings. In five at-bats this week, the 29-year-old struck out three times. Prior to Monday’s game, the Royals were three games back in the race for the second American League wildcard spot.
Jimmy Reed, LHP, State College Spikes (St. Louis Cardinals Class-A short-season affiliate)
2013 stats: 3-3, 2.36 ERA, 2 saves, 14 G, 11 GS, 60 hits, 49 strikeouts, 14 walks in 61 IP
Skinny: Almost four months after his collegiate career ended, Reed started the deciding game three of the New York-Penn League Championship Series on Thursday. It was his second start of the postseason, after allowing two runs in three innings five days earlier. Reed wasn’t much better on the second try, getting charged with Tri-City’s first two runs and taking the loss in the 4-3 defeat, which crowned the Tri-City ValleyCats champions. Reed left the game in the top of the sixth with runners on second and third after allowing three hits and striking out four through five and a third innings. Both of the players Reed allowed on base came around to score with Tri-City scoring all four of its runs in the sixth.
Jack Cleary, C, Helena Brewers (Milwaukee Brewers rookie affiliate)
2013 stats: .244 average, .283 on-base percentage, 0 HR, 8 RBI, 10 runs, 0 stolen bases, 14 strikeouts, 4 walks (As of Sept. 15)
Skinny: Cleary hasn’t played since Sept. 6, but the Helena Brewers haven’t been as inactive. Helena advanced to the Pioneer League Championship on Wednesday with a 8-6 victory. However, Helena lost 2-1 Sunday setting up an elimination game in the best-of-three series for Tuesday.
