On the campus, there is a serious shortage of isolated spots with great views. And as much as I love people and college, sometimes I just need to take a break and experience nature. If you’re like me and like outdoor places with few people and a great view, I know just the place. Try the path that runs from Xfinity Center past the greenhouses in the early evening — and if you’re a walker or runner, you can work your way down to Paint Branch Trail, which is both flat and peaceful.

The Overlook, as I have nicknamed it, is one of the coolest spots on the campus because you run on top of a hill that gives a spectacular view of isolated parts of North Campus. Very few people seem to venture this way in the evenings (or on Fridays, the other day I tend to be over there), but those who walk this path are treated to the best view on the campus. The Overlook trail, while very short, is also very open and free of buildings — a rarity on this campus.

However, keep an eye out for nature that gets too close. Several times, I have run feet away from a stag that has wandered onto the path or the grassy area next to it. Each time, I was worried he might charge at me in a panic, which would be decidedly bad for me, as I would have been crushed. This shows you the natural feel of the place, and why it is so different from the rest of the built-up sprawl on the campus.

The wandering deer notwithstanding, this overlook is a perfect place for a few minutes of relaxation or meditation. Our campus has few places that afford great views away from all the big buildings. The Overlook provides just this — a place to be with nature — and allows us a few minutes away from the hustle and bustle of the campus.
