The Terrapin football team has agreed to play a home-and-home series with Texas starting in 2017, the athletics department announced yesterday.

The Terps will head to Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium to face the Longhorns on Sept. 2, 2017 for the first game of the series. The two teams will meet again Sept. 1, 2018 in Maryland, though the specific site of the game has not been released.

The athletics department’s release states that Texas will “make the return trip” for the second game of the home-and-home series without specifying whether it will be played in Byrd Stadium or elsewhere. According to several media reports, the 2018 game will be played at FedEx Field, home of the Washington Redskins, in Landover.

“I don’t think we know that yet,” Associate Athletics Director Doug Dull said of the location of the second game.

Although the series was formally announced yesterday, rumors of a possible showdown between the Terps and the Big 12 juggernaut surfaced over the summer, when DCist.com reported that the series would take place in 2014 and 2015, with the teams receiving a combined $3.5 million for the series. Finances of the deal were not immediately available.

The Texas series is the second high-profile matchup the Terps have announced in the past year. The first, announced in March, is a 2011 game against Notre Dame at FedEx Field, where the Terps have never played.
