Another game, another shutout.
At least this time the Terrapin women’s soccer team earned a point.
Last night at Riggs Field in Clemson, the Terps played the Tigers to a 0-0 double overtime tie in the ACC opener. The Terps haven’t scored since last Sunday’s 1-0 win over Rutgers – 378 minutes and counting.
The Tigers (5-2-2) outshot the Terps (2-5-2), 16-12, but both teams had chances to win and could not come through. Terps’ goalie Nikki Resnick made nine saves and was helped by the crossbar in the 65th minute.
For the Terps, junior midfielder Sarah Sample had the team’s best scoring opportunity in the sixth minute of overtime, but she also nailed the crossbar with a shot.
In order to produce more of an offensive attack, coach Brian Pensky made some slight changes to his lineup.
Sophomore Ashly Kennedy, normally a defender, played the center midfield position while freshman Kimmy Bunting started as a center back. To make room for Kennedy, Pensky moved senior midfielder Kimmy Francis to the forward position.
Francis and Sample each had four shots to lead the Terps. Pensky credited his team’s ability to stay focused throughout the game.
“The plusses tonight were that every player that was on the field battled for 100 minutes,” he said. “We didn’t have any mental lapses that could have cost us the game.”
But with that, Penky was disappointed that the Terps were unable to come away with a victory. “On the flip side, it’s still a tie,” he said. “We come to Clemson expecting to win the game and we didn’t.”
And maybe more importantly, their offensive struggles continued.
