When ACC play began four weeks ago, the Terrapins football team’s matchup against one-win Boston College looked like it could be an easy chance at victory.
But at halftime in Chestnut Hill, Mass., it’s clear that’s no longer the case.
Struggling though special teams gaffes, turnovers and quarterback Caleb Rowe’s inconsistency, the Terps trail the Eagles, 10-0, at the break.
Despite the fact they’re playing the ACC’s worst defense, the Terps haven’t been able to get anything going on offense. Their 150 total yards lead Boston College by 16, but they haven’t been able to capitalize on it.
In his first career start, Rowe is 13-of-27 for 81 yards and two interceptions, the second of which ended a potential Terps’ scoring drive at the Eagles 6-yard line. The Terps’ only other chance to score came late in the first quarter, when kicker Brad Craddock missed a 35-yard field goal attempt.
The team’s defense has played strong for the most part, but the Terps’ special teams unit has struggled early at Alumni Stadium. Spiffy Evans 109 punt-return yards on three kicks have helped set up Boston College with short fields, leading to quarterback Chase Rettig’s touchdown pass and Nick Frese’s field goal.
The Terps only trail by 10 at the break, but they’ll have to cut back on the errors if they’re going to make any sort of comeback in the second half.
