Sophomore Juli Strange steals 3rd base during the Terps’ 10-2 victory over Delaware State on April 16, 2014.

Trailing 7-1 entering the bottom of the fifth inning, the Terrapins softball team went on a tear, scoring five unanswered runs in the next two innings. But when the Terps loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, they failed to capitalize on the opportunity, stranding three runners.

Despite the comeback effort, the Terps dropped their first game of the season to Virginia Tech, 7-6, at the Coastal Carolina Kickin’ Chicken Classic in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on Friday afternoon.

Stranding runners was a common theme for the Terps, who stranded at least one runner in each inning and a total of 11 in the game.

Infielder Juli Strange led the way driving in two runs, while outfielder Kylie Datil hit the team’s first home run of the season. Pitcher Hannah Dewey pitched four innings of relief for Kaitlyn Schmeiser and didn’t allowing an earned run. She also made an impact with her bat going 2-for-3 and scoring one run.

The Terps play a doubleheader tomorrow. They’ll face off with Lafayette at 10 a.m. before meeting Virginia tech for a rematch.
