The Terrapins women’s basketball team will leave St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands unbeaten.
Behind center Brionna Jones’ 22-point performance, the Terps defeated Pittsburgh, 70-49, on Saturday night in their final game of the Paradise Jam.
The two teams traded baskets in the opening minutes before a Terps’ 5-0 run midway through the opening quarter gave them 13-5 advantage. Jones, who scored a team-high 21 points in the Terps’ win over South Dakota State on Friday night, poured in eight points during that stretch.
Guard Brene Moseley and forward Kiah Gillespie joined in on the scoring late in the first quarter, helping the Terps (6-0) finish the first quarter with an eight-point lead.
Their lead quickly doubled, as the Terps scored the first 10 points of the second quarter. And after forward Tierney Pfirman’s midrange jumper with 5:09 left before halftime, coach Brenda Frese’s team held a 33-13 advantage.
But for the rest of the half, the Terps offense went cold.
They missed five shots and committed as many turnovers over that span, allowing Pittsburgh (4-2) to score the final nine points of the quarter. Suddenly, the Panthers were within striking distance.
But Jones continued to dominate after the break. First, she converted two layups. Then, she knocked down two free throws. She laid in another basket moments later — giving her the team’s first eight points of the period — and the Terps were up 13.
On the next possession, Gillespie gave a small fist bump after drilling an open 3-pointer to further put her team in command. The Terps went on to outscore the Panthers, 22-11, and took a commanding lead into the final 10 minutes.
While Pittsburgh made three straight shots from beyond the arc, cutting the deficit to 13, the Terps never allowed the Panthers within single digits. In fact, the Terps held their opponent from 35 percent from the field en route to their sixth straight win to start the season.
Aside from their game with South Dakota State, the Terps have had little trouble handling their first six opponents. They’ll face a stiff test Wednesday night, though, when they host No. 23 Syracuse at Xfinity Center in the ACC/Big Ten challenge.
