The ACC coaches voted three members of the Terrapins field hockey team to the preseason All-ACC team Thursday and ranked the Terps second of seven teams in the league, behind 2012 ACC champion North Carolina.
The Terps had the most players selected to the 11-member All-ACC squad, with defender Ali McEvoy, forward Jill Witmer and midfielder Maxine Fluharty representing the team. Her second time on the list, Witmer, a senior, is a three-time All-ACC honoree, while McEvoy and Fluharty — a senior and junior, respectively — make the preseason list for the first time. McEvoy has made the regular season conference team once.
The preseason rankings vote is structured around a system that awards points depending on the vote. Each first-place vote receives six points, while last-place votes are given no points. The Terps received the only first-place vote not awarded to the Tar Heels, amassing 31 points in the process, five points fewer than North Carolina’s 36.
The Terps hold their first exhibition game at Penn State on Friday afternoon, then return to College Park for an intrasquad scrimmage Sunday. The team opens the regular season against New Hampshire in Temple’s Conference Cup on Aug. 31.
