Left-hander Jake Drossner pitches in the Terps’ 10-1 win over Delaware on March 11, 2014.

Terrapins baseball left-hander Jake Drossner entered this weekend with a 4-0 record and a 2.03 ERA in six appearances, five of which had been starts. While Drossner excelled against non-conference opponents in midweek games, he made the first weekend start of his career Sunday as the latest player coach John Szefc plugged in during his search for a reliable third starter.

Drossner worked around eight hits in four innings to allow one run, but the Terps bullpen faltered as the Terps fell, 6-4, to Virginia Tech at English Field in Blacksburg, Va. The Hokies scored five unanswered runs to clinch the series victory.

The Terps have won one ACC series this season, a sweep of N.C. State.

Drossner got out of bases-loaded jams in the first and fourth inning by inducing inning-ending double plays, but the Hokies scored three go-ahead runs in the seventh after loading the bases.

A wild pitch in the second plated the Hokies’ first run, and the Terps are now 0-10 when their opponent scores first.

Terps catcher Nick Cieri tied the game with an RBI single in the fourth. After first baseman LaMonte Wade advanced to third on a passed ball, third baseman Jose Cuas drove him in with a groundout to third.

Wade, who finished 3-for-4, singled in a run in the fifth to increase the Terps’ lead to 3-1.

The Hokies tied the game up with two runs in the sixth, which knocked left-hander Tayler Stiles, who relieved Drossner, out of the game.

In the seventh, the Hokies loaded the bases with one out. Right-hander Jared Price, who started the season as the Terps’ Sunday starter, allowed all three Hokies he faced to reach base. A hit by pitch and two singles plated three runs.

The tying run came to the plate during the ninth, but the Terps could only score one run.

The Hokies had 15 hits, more than double the Terps’ total of seven.

Right-hander Brad Markey, who got the save in the Terps’ 3-1 loss Friday, started for the Hokies. Markey normally pitches on Friday night, but the Hokies switched up the rotation this weekend. Sunday, Markey allowed six hits, three walks and three runs in 6.1 innings.
