Ryan Holland, who just completed his senior season on the Terrapins baseball team, was arrested Monday afternoon in Omaha, Neb., after he and his younger brother allegedly switched the price tags on items of clothing in a sporting goods store.
According to Omaha city prosecutor Marty Conboy, Holland, whose full name is Steven Ryan Holland, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of damaging property and paid a $50 fine.
Holland, who played second base last season and was a designated hitter this season for the Terps, allegedly ripped off a $32 tag on a pair of Nike Dri-FIT shorts and attempted to replace it with a $19.99 tag from the sale rack with the intention of buying the merchandise at a reduced price, Conboy said. The incident occurred at 4:15 p.m. near TD Ameritrade Park. Holland was there for his brother’s appearance in the College World Series. John Holland, a freshman designated hitter at Florida State, was also arrested for the same charges. He, too, paid the $50 fine, Conboy said; he was suspended indefinitely from the FSU baseball program.
The shorts were returned to the store, Conboy said, and neither Holland faces charges of theft. The case is now closed.
“It’s really a simple but sad story,” Conboy said, adding that the incident was, “unfortunate dumb kid stuff.”
The elder Holland hit .220 for the Terps last season, recording 24 hits and 10 RBIs.
Calls to the Terps baseball head coach Erik Bakick were not immediately returned Tuesday afternoon.
According to court documents, Holland, a John’s Creek, Ga., native, has no previous record of offenses in this state.
