Town Hall, a bar and liquor store that has been a longtime College Park establishment, is up for sale.

Town Hall Liquors, the popular College Park lounge and liquor store, is up for sale.

The 6,480-square-foot property is being sold for $4 million, according to the Coakley Realty website.

James Higgins, the store’s general manager, told the city council during its Sept. 15 work session that while there is no timetable for the sale, he met with a few potential buyers earlier in the month. Some people expressed interest in turning the space into something other than a liquor store and lounge, he said.

Town Hall management declined to comment further due to company policy.

Town Hall has been a fixture for locals and students since 1949. The cash-only lounge features a pool table and antique pinball machines that often bring local players to the venue.

“Honestly, they have two other liquor stores on the block,” College Park resident Stephen Skolnick said. “But at the same time, this seems to have some local flair to it. It is kind of a bummer that the only non-college bar could be gone.”

District 2 Councilman P.J. Brennan said the city is looking into the best uses for the properties along Route 1. He said the most popular are mixed-use properties, which combine retail and housing.

“A mixed-use property would certainly be something for a developer to explore, but I wouldn’t want to limit anyone’s imagination in terms of what could go there,” Brennan said.

Last month, the Prince George’s County Board of License Commissioners approved Town Hall’s application for a permit to sell liquor on Sundays, with the stipulation that it invest at least $50,000 in store improvements.

Higgins told the council that Town Hall plans to update its facade and front area. The store must implement the improvements within a year or its permit will be revoked, and the permit is not transferrable, Brennan said.

“We want places to look inviting and we want them to fit in with the overall plan,” Brennan said. “The investment in the existing establishment’s exterior would be of value. Any future investment or development there, I think would be great.”

Randall Toussaint, the city’s economic development coordinator, said he has not heard any updates about the property.
