On the eve of ACC play, the Terrapins women’s basketball team announced it is receiving some much-needed depth as it begins a daunting slate.

Caitlin Adams, a senior middle blocker for the Terrapins volleyball team, will join the team and is eligible to compete immediately, according to an athletic department news release today.

Adams, a 6-foot-3 forward from Leawood, Kan., bolsters the frontcourt and joins a team that was previously playing with three players on its bench. She played three years of AAU basketball as well as time with her high school team at Notre Dame de Sion in Kansas City, Mo., the release stated.

“I heard about the injuries on the basketball team this year and I just thought I could help them out,” Adams said in the release. “I knew a lot of the girls and contacted the coaches and came out one day. It’s such a well-respected program and the coaches and girls are a lot of fun.”

She is an addition to a dominant frontcourt that features forwards Tianna Hawkins, who leads the ACC in scoring with 18.8 points per game, and Alyssa Thomas, the defending conference player of the year.

“[Adams is] athletic and is a team player that we know can really help us out depth-wise,” coach Brenda Frese said. “She came in and spent time with us and we just knew she’d fit right in with our program.”

This fall, Adams played in 22 matches, starting 13 of them. She ranked fifth on the team in blocks per set (0.54). She missed time because of an injury. In 2011, she played 32 matches and notched an average 2.09 kills per set. Her 253 kills were third on the team and her 112 blocks led the Terps.

Previously, she spent two years at Texas A&M.

Adams joins the team right as the No. 8 Terps enter the teeth of their ACC slate. The team takes on No. 15 North Carolina tomorrow night in Chapel Hill, N.C. It’s currently riding a six-game win streak and hasn’t lost since falling to No. 1 Connecticut on Dec. 3.
