University Police responded to 55 incidents over the past seven days, according to spokeswoman Sgt. Rosanne Hoaas.

THEFT — On Monday at about 1 p.m., police responded to the University Book Center, where an unknown quantity of books was stolen.

Three suspects fled the scene, and per regulation, additional officers patrolled the Route 1 corridor. On Route 1, an officer came in contact with someone who appeared nervous outside BookHolders. When two others left BookHolders, the officer was able to identify all three as the ones involved.

In incidents involving stolen books, “BookHolders is just something we check just in case,” Hoaas said.

The suspects have no affiliation with the university community, Hoaas said. Two of the three were charged with theft of less than $1,000, Hoaas added, along with additional charges.

RECOVERED STOLEN MOTOR VEHICLE — At about 2 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 24, university police stopped a stolen motor vehicle on Queens Chapel Road.

The officer was using a police cruiser equipped with an automatic license plate reader, Hoaas said. The officer initiated a traffic stop and took the individual into custody, she added. The driver had no affiliation with the university, and there were no additional charges.

ALCOHOL VIOLATION — At 12:33 a.m. Saturday, a police officer charged a student with an alcohol violation on Norwich Road, Hoaas said.

The student was of legal drinking age but had an open container in a public place, Hoaas said. Upon talking with the student, the officer saw the container was filled with alcohol and referred the student to the Office of Student Conduct.

Now that students are back from vacation, Hoaas said, it is important they notice their surroundings and report anything suspicious.

“Be smart, be safe and protect your things,” she said.
