Can’t think of something to ask people for? Pick something from this list and you won’t be disappointed.
Subscription to Vogue or Men’s Health – $18 and $25, respectively:
The Good: Encourages the common college student both to stay in style and to read.
The Bad: Will arrive after the holidays.
The Skinny: This gift will provide a much-needed break from the constant barrage of bills and university notices arriving in your mailbox. A monthly subscription means you’re essentially getting 12 gifts and will encourage you to stay stylish for an entire year. The weekly newsmagazine The Economist is a great alternative for the news-savvy.
The New American Bartender’s Handbook, by David Broom – $14.98:
The Good: Includes directions and illustrations for making 1,000 drinks.
The Bad: Irresponsible minors may get their hands on it and do illegal things.
The Skinny: Any book that explains how to mix is great because it simultaneously encourages learning and playing. And because alcohol is the most common gift among college students, this book will help you better appreciate your holiday experience.
Back to Basics Smoothie Elite Blender – $39.99:
The Good: Allows you to blend delicious smoothies, Frappuccinos and protein shakes.
The Bad: Takes time and energy to clean. Slightly bulky. Constantly blending ice mixes will wear down the gears after a few months.
The Skinny: This is one dorm room kitchen gadget RAs don’t seem to have a problem with. You will be able to use it repeatedly and often. It is extremely easy to use and more stylish than a standard blender. (For some reason, people are usually impressed by the dispenser valve.) Get the more expensive, more durable Smoothie Professional for $95 if you will be blending iced mixes most often.
Pea coat – $60 to $180:
The Good: Will keep you warm. Can come in both cotton and wool. Pea coats on men reinforce their masculinity, and pea coats on women reinforce a conservative-yet-sexy style.
The Bad: Cotton isn’t heavy enough to stay warm in mid-winter.
The Skinny: Goes best in chilly weather. The pea coat is fashionable for parties and sufficiently elegant for formal situations.
Concert tickets – $20 to $80 per ticket:
The Good: A wonderful three-hour vacation. Potential for creating great memories with friends.
The Bad: They are expensive and the experience is short.
The Skinny: You will need at least two tickets, so you can take a friend. You can reciprocate by inviting the person who gave you the tickets to go with you. Two upcoming shows at the Verizon Center are Red Hot Chili Peppers on Jan. 25 and Justin Timberlake with Pink on Feb. 2.
