Terrapins men’s basketball guard Dez Wells was named to the Wooden Award Preseason Top 50, the Los Angeles Athletic Club announced Monday.
The Wooden Award honors the best player in college basketball each season. Wells averaged 14.9 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.2 assists last season and was named to the All-ACC third team.
Friday night, Wells, a senior who transferred from Xavier after his freshman year, began the new campaign with a game-high 18 points in the Terps’ 82-48 victory over Wagner. Wells had an injury scare when he sprained a faulty ankle, but coach Mark Turgeon said his leader will be on the floor tonight when the Terps host Central Connecticut State at Xfinity Center.
Wells also lead the Terps in scoring with 13.1 points per game as a sophomore. He’s had his share of dazzling performances the last few season, too, including a 30-point outburst in an upset of Duke in the 2013 ACC tournament, a career-high 33-point performance in a win over Boston College last December and a game-winning three pointer against Miami in January.
