Family-oriented Mexican restaurant Los Cabos opened its doors on Route 1 Thursday after months of delay.
The grand opening comes after $300,000 in sewer, roof and kitchen repairs pushed back the originally scheduled date in June. Named for a Mexican beach on Baja California and located next to Taco Bell, the restaurant hopes to attract people away from the downtown bars and fast-food restaurants, server Marcos Bacquez said. The restaurant is waiting for its liquor permit to arrive any day now in the mail, said Hector Brambile, owner and manager.
“Business has been good so far,” Brambile said. “We will be picking up more [customers]. We’ve had a lot of people calling to see if we have liquor.”
Alcohol aside, the chimichangas, quesadillas and fajitas have been the most popular menu items, Bacquez said. Prices run from about $9 to $13, and the fajitas are the house specialty due to their special salsa, he said.
Los Cabos’ sit-down style is a shift from the usual fast-food haunts in town such as Chipotle, California Tortilla and Taco Bell. The restaurant is “family-style,” Brambile said, so it targets all ages. Some customers have already made repeat visits, Brambile said. It’s still early, but Bacquez said he hopes students check out Los Cabos.
“There’s a lot of people [on the campus] with different tastes,” he said. “I think we have very good food, and the restaurant has very nice decorations and service.”
The decor to which Bacquez referred features stone walls and many potted plants, but Brambile said he wants people to see it for themselves.
“We finally got everything together,” Brambile said. “People are happy to be here.”
