After the Terrapins women’s lacrosse team’s Senior Day ceremony concluded Saturday afternoon, goalkeeper Alex Fitzpatrick jogged out to her usual starting spot between the pipes.
But the fifth-year senior didn’t stay on the field for long in the Terps’ 14-9 home win over Michigan.
With the No. 1 Terps holding a 7-3 lead with about six minutes left in the first half, coach Cathy Reese pulled Fitzpatrick, who notched two saves.
Goalkeeper Emily Kift was the first backup netminder to play off the bench. The sophomore recorded three saves and picked up one ground ball in about 18 minutes of action.
In the second half, Reese again turned to her bench for a goalkeeper, this time in Emma Moss. The freshman goalie logged a team-high five saves while allowing five Wolverines goals.
“[Moss] had some great saves in there, which was nice to see, because sometimes when she does get the opportunity to get in, there might not even be any shots on her,” Reese said.
On a day when 31 different Terps played, Reese was pleased to get her underclassmen goalies more experience before the postseason begins.
“They all had their moments today,” Reese said. “We want to take from today that whatever you do for the team, it’s all valuable and important to our overall success.”
DRAW CONTROL SUCCESS
Entering Saturday’s game, midfielder Zoe Stukenberg said the Terps knew the match would be “physical, and they were going to be fouling us.”
But the Terps didn’t let the Wolverines’ aggression deter their game plan in the draw circle. The Terps outdrew Michigan 18-7 and held a 13-3 advantage at halftime.
Midfielder Taylor Cummings, who leads the team with 111 draw controls, controlled four against the Wolverines in limited action.
Reese rotated midfielder Deb Milani and Stukenberg into the circle while Cummings rested, and the two sophomores recorded three and one possessions, respectively.
“It was just heart and hustle and everyone on the circle coming in hard,” Stukenberg said. “[The team] did an amazing job coming off the 30 and off the circle, getting those loose balls.”
Nine Terps recovered at least one draw. And they didn’t allow Michigan’s physicality — the Wolverines out-fouled them 43-20 — to affect their success on draws.
“They’re a tough team,” attacker Taylor Salandra said. “You kind of just have to keep your composure and just stay poised and stay calm. You can’t let it get to you.”
WHITTLE, CUMMINGS WIN AWARDS
Attacker Megan Whittle and Cummings received weekly Big Ten honors for their performances this past week, the conference announced Monday.
Cummings earned her first Co-Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week accolade after securing 15 draw controls, scooping three ground balls and causing one turnover in the Terps’ games against Johns Hopkins and Michigan last week. She shared the honor with Penn State goalkeeper Emi Smith.
The junior also has been the Big Ten’s Offensive Player of the Week four times.
Whittle garnered Big Ten’s Freshman of the Week after scoring three goals in both contests last week. It’s the rookie’s sixth time earning the honor this year.
The Terps have had at least one player win a weekly Big Ten honor in each of the first 10 weeks of the season, and the team has received 18 recognitions overall.
Penn State’s Steph Lazzo earned Offensive Player of the Week honors to round out this week’s awards.
Lazzo, Smith and the Nittany Lions visit the Terps on Thursday night in a clash of undefeated conference squads to determine the Big Ten’s regular-season champion.
