Pitcher Kaitlyn Schmeiser winds up during the Terps’ 18-8 victory over Dartmouth on March 25, 2015.

The Terrapins softball team trailed 10-2 with two outs in the top of the fifth inning and the bases loaded for Ohio State.

Pitcher Kaitlyn Schmeiser, who was taken out in the third inning, walked into the circle to help the Terps get out of a hellish fifth frame. She did just that by recording a strikeout. And from there, the Terps never looked back.

They scored nine unanswered runs and won their Big Ten home opener, 11-10, over the Buckeyes. Infielder Corey Schwartz hit a walk-off home run to cap the thrilling win.

Schmeiser earned the win and improved her record to 15-5, after allowing only two hits, no runs and striking out four over the course of the final three innings.

Her late-game success came after she pitched the first 2 ⅓ innings, giving up four earned runs. Schmeiser returned after pitchers Brenna Nation and Jaymi Bautista-Geiger allowed a combined five runs through 1 ⅔ innings pitched.

The team stranded nine total base runners throughout the game and at least one in every inning but the last. In the end, the bats inefficiency throughout the game proved meaningless.

The win also overshadowed three gaffes on the defensive side of the ball, all committed by shortstop Kyle Datil, who’s been playing the position while Lindsey Schmeiser spends her time in the outfield due to back issues.

Lindsey Schmeiser extended her hit streak to eleven games going 2-for-3, drawing two walks and driving in one run. Schwartz, the late-game hero also went 2-for-3 at the plate.

The win marks the fourth time this season that the Terps have comeback to win when trailing after six. With the victory, the team improves to 21-13 on the season and 3-1 in Big Ten play.
