Mike Shawaryn throws a pitch during the Terps’ 10-1 win over Iowa at Bob “Turtle” Smith Field on April 10, 2015.
Terrapins baseball right-hander Mike Shawaryn was named the Big Ten Pitcher of the Week for the third time this season, the conference announced Tuesday.
Shawaryn picked up the win Friday in a 10-1 victory over No. 20 Iowa with eight innings of one-run ball. In nine starts, he’s 8-0, which is tied for first in the nation.
After notching his 19th career victory Friday, Shawaryn is one win away from tying the program wins record set by Josh Rayne from 1989-1992.
Friday, Shawaryn scattered six hits, issued two walks and struck out nine while throwing 128 pitches over eight frames.
The Terps ace, Shawaryn leads the Big Ten in strikeouts with 69. He’s also held opponents to a .193 average and has a 1.89 ERA.
Shawaryn, along with Terps second baseman Brandon Lowe, was named to the 60-player midseason watch list for the Golden Spikes Award this past Thursday. The award is given annually to the top amateur baseball player in the nation.
Shawaryn will likely start for the No. 24 Terps this Friday when they welcome Cal State Fullerton to Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium. The game will be shown on the Big Ten Network.
Last season, former Terps right-hander Jake Stinnett earned ACC Pitcher of the Week honors four times.
